Sifu Nick Caporin
The Seven Star Praying Mantis style of Northern Shaolin Kung Fu has a strong lineage of masters who have passed down the teachings and knowledge of their art to many generations of students. The founder and head instructor of Iron Phoenix, Sifu Nick Caporin, is a 9th generation descendant of the Seven Star Praying Mantis line. He has been a diligent study of martial arts for over 20 years, achieveing skill and rank in various arts before finding kung fu. His training began in Rochester, NY under Sifu Brian Bateman (8th generation Sifu under Grandmaster Lee Kam Wing) where the foundation he had built in the other styles since childhood allowed him to progress quickly. In less than 2 years he took on the role of assistant instructor and helped many students develop their skills and knowledge in mantis kung fu. In the 8 years he trained at the Rochester school, Sifu Caporin had nearly completed the entire system as laid out by Grandmaster Lee Kam Wing. However, knowing that the breadth of knowledge is vast across the kung fu family, he sought out further training in order to continue to develop his skills. This led him to Dallas, TX and Grandmaster Raymond Fogg (9th generation Sifu under Great-Grandmaster Chiu Leun), one of the most prolific 7-Star Praying Mantis masters in the United States whose students are well known for their formidable ability within this art. Since 2007, Sifu Caporin has continued his training under Grandmaster Fogg; constantly furthering his skill and knowledge of the art. During this time he has supported Grandmaster Fogg and his affiliated schools (collectively known as the United States Kung Fu Exchange) by leading and teaching at numerous seminars, workshops and other various training events.
While his training under Grandmaster Fogg advanced his ability greatly, there is never an end to the constant desire to improve. Forever a student, Sifu Caporin continues to train with Grandmaster Fogg as well as his kung fu brethren in order to heighten his skills further. This is an endevour that should never end since the only way to prevent these arts from being lost is through the hard work, dedication, and desire of its students.
Over the years, Sifu Caporin has received recommendations from some of the top martial artists in the country. Below are some of their quotes:
